Here’s To The Mad Men!
In October 2011 the world lost three young men that frankly I had never heard of…
Dan Wheldon – British racing driver
Marco Simoncelli – Italian motorcycle racer
Antoine Montant – French speed flying champion
They were killed doing highly risky sports activities. Amongst the shock and tributes were a few voices of ‘Why is it necessary to do such dangerous sports?’ and ‘Well it is only to be expected when people don’t respect safety rules and their own lives.’
Me, I’m a careful, mindful soul.
OCD makes me over analyze even the most basic everyday things, but even I recognize that we need the Mad Men.
We need them. They push the boundaries of human ability and exploration. They are the ones that keep discovering that we CAN.
We need people who do that with their intellect, their spirits and their bodies. It means that the rest of us can sit on our sofa’s and computer chairs and pontificate from a safe distance.
Their lives are raw, loud and authentic. It’s hardcore wake up calls every race and every new previously unbroken human boundary. So here’s to the Mad Men and Whacky Women who keep the place jumping and alive, thrilling, rule-free, reckless and on edge.
At the very least, these 3 men all LIVED before they died. Here’s to you!

The video is Antoine Montant speed gliding in Chamonix. Watch and be amazed.
Haha wow that video looked amazing. I used to have dreams where the world was like one big trampoline. You’re pretty much fly around, or rather glide, touching down on spots and bouncing back up again. Haha, maybe I should start doing this kind of stuff!
I like what you said here about risktakers being necessary. We definitely need them. Just as we need the careful, calm people too. Everybody has a place that helps further our race. We shouldn’t hate on one side just because we are from the other.

The video is awesome!
I have not heard of the guys you mentioned too. But I enjoyed the message about living life passionately and fully. Thank you!

Hello Evelyn, always great to have your positive energy around.
Hi Pea,
We need the Evel Kineval type of people to remind us of how lame we really are .
I like to keep my feet on the
ground as much as possible.

Oh love it! Yes we do Justin. It does help to see that a lot of the time there really is no such thing as ‘can’t’ - we really mean ‘won’t.’
Okay where do I sign up to get to do this? Absolutely awesome!
Oprah Alert! – I’m sorry but I’m ‘going Oprah’ on you in the following sentence:
You sign up to LIFE dear chap! …LIFE!
Such a shame to lose the three guys but you are right that at least they lived before they died. The video is amazing. The guy must have been nuts to know but really exciting company wow.
I agree Becky and I love to be around these people and soak up their craziness and can-do energy. Thanks for your comments, as ever.
I agree with you. While I regret the deaths of these men, their adventuresome spirit is something I admire. I’m a pretty cautious person and don’t take a lot of risks, especially physical risks. My dad was the other way. If life had been different for him, he would have been a race car driver, without a doubt. He used to take us to car races, not Nascar but car endurance races, like 12-hours of Sebring. I remember he always had this grin of awe on his face as the cars flashed by.
In addition, without the “daredevils” of this world so many things would not have been discovered. We wouldn’t have learned about flight, cars, space if some daredevil hadn’t said, “Hey, that looks like fun. Let me give it a go!”
I think your post right on — these men weren’t afraid to live life to fullest!

Hello Sara! You too are spot on. I have witnessed whole cultures based on fear and suspicion of new ideas, thoughts and exploration and in turn seen how vulnerable it has made those cultures intellectually and economically. We have to maintain a ‘let me give it a go’ mentality, not only to keep up but because that simply is living.
I have a sign on my courtyard that says “a wild, wacky, wonderful woman lives here.” It has a woman in brightly coloured clothes, bare feet and painted toes diving through the clouds – without a parachute. Your post about more serious affairs and loss of life through extreme sports reminds me that from whatever vantage point we can all stretch a little and feel the wind in our face. And no, I do not recommend diving through the clouds without parachute… but dipping your toes in the cold Pacific Ocean while the seagulls scream overhead, yes. Yes that I highly recommend. All the best Pea. Excellent post.
